The 391 Project was born in 1983: the result of the desires of two restless teens from Ascoli Piceno, a boring city in the deep Italian province.
The idea was to create a series of compilations on tape as some sort of snapshot of the Italian music underground.
The title was a tribute to the New York Dada magazine of the same name, edited by Francis Picabia.
The intention was to collect Wave and Post Punk groups from different regions and organize them geographically within a map of the Italian fringe music scene of the time.
It was a special selection representing the radical side of the new national Rock identity, and an attempt to catch the real essence of the music which blossomed after the ‘77 explosion.
Despite the huge amount of collected material, the 391 project disbanded in 1985, just after the release of the first two volumes dedicated to the Marche and Umbria regions.
With the new Spittle executive production and the involvement of old and new companions, we wish to restart the whole project and extend its sonic spectrum. After more than 30 years, 391 is back in order to unearth mostly unreleased treasures and offer a new journey deep into the Italian underground.
Description by founding members: Pierpaolo De Iulis and Gianlorenzo Giovannozzi.
