The 391 project was born in 1983 from the desire of two troubled teenagers from the boring provincial town of Ascoli Piceno, Italy, to give life and form to a series of tape compilations portraying the Italian music underground. The name choice was intended as a tribute Dadaist Francis Picabia's magazine of the same name. The intent was to geographically organize the musical material, probing the new wave and post-punk groups region by region. A mapping of Italy's music, the marginalized and angular, selected to represent the most radical of the new national rock scene, and to capture the very essence of the group that grew up in the aftermath of the post-'77 explosion. Despite a great deal of collected material from various regions, the 391 project stopped in 1985, after the release of the first two volumes dedicated to Marche and Umbria. In 2015, more than thirty years after its birth, 391 resumes the thread and widens the sound spectrum in an effort to be as comprehensive as possible, returning to unearth treasures, in many cases not yet emerged, through a new journey into deep Italian underground. Available in three separate volumes: Vol. 1: Marche (SPITTLE 1000CD), Vol. 2: Piemonte (SPITTLE 1001CD), and Vol. 3: Toscana (SPITTLE 1002CD). Vol. 3 includes tracks by The Antennas, The Gam Ones, Dia-Triba, The Beesunti, Exit, Dr. Dodo, Lirico, Comida Frugal, Vanish Memory, Yalta, Tape Transfer, Out of Sync, Charly Fun, L.A.S.'s Crime, Paul Ray, Still, Redox, Passiflora, Alito Control, Alogena, Uncertain Smile, Not the Same Jazz, Hanomen Ixen, Stropharia Merdaria, Circosmosi, Mostri, Uomini e Dei, New-Da, Thanatou Melos, Symbiosi, Zehelendorf, La Disciplina, Claudio Fusai & Franco Piri Focardi, Tecnoplurals, Zogarten, Quideau, Delta Tau Chi, and The Garden.
